When my friend V alerted me on IM, 'your favorite author is no more' , I was truly shocked. This is something I have always dreaded. You know you adore and respect this person and his words - and you always knew he is getting old - but you just do not want that chapter to end ever! What I am going to say more, will sound dramatic and cliched - just two days back, I imagined getting this news that writer Sujatha is no more and was thinking how would I feel to hear that. My dad and I talked about his being old - and we both did not say it in words, but shared somehow the fear of this day!
And I cannot believe that the time has come. All good things come to an end. No one can escape from death. Such words come to my mind.
Sujatha a.ka. Rangarajan, was my favorite author always. I have missed reading his recent works, but Appa keeps telling me they are so up to date. It is amazing how he kept abreast of technology and today's way of life. All his writings reflected 'today' as he sees it. It never felt to his ardent followers that he has become 'old' and his writing is not making sense for the present day. Even when he wrote about his 'old' age problems, we enjoyed his style of writing.
His books were an integral part of my childhood. Reading his stories and sharing the enjoyment has been the most integral part of my relation with dad. When there was nobody to play with, being the only child in the home, I used to pick Sujatha's book, read for nth time, reliving the story. It was like watching a great movie over and over.Knowing what will happen never lessened the enjoyment I get. The climax punching lines gave the same effect, even when I knew that this is going to come, and I waited for the line.
He was 73 and really ill. May his soul rest in peace. The contributions he has done to the world of Tamil will be alive for ever.

Sujatha Died , Shocking news to all his lakhs of fans all over the world.
Sujatha, was liked by Tamils very much. He was a blessed writer by both "Tamil Annai" and "Ranganathar". Created a new "Tamil Nadai" The first writer to use computer to write Tamil novels. His contribution to Tamil will be remembered for ever. Very simple and modern thinker. His "Ganesh and Vasanth "Characters had same youthness for more than 30 years. Great loss to Tamil literature. May his soul rest in peace

I am so sorry to hear this news, not speaking, reading or writing Tamil, I am not familiar with his writing, but your words convey deep regret, but remember that such writers will live forever through their works...keep him alive, spread word of the glories of his work. Condolences.
I can't believe Sujatha is no more. I grew up reading Sujatha. His short stories on Sri Rangam are so moving, they transport you back to those days. It took a while to get out of the impact of his books. If one merely read his books without knowing his age, one would tend to think he was in his 30's. May his soul rest in peace.

@narayan - I agree with you. Srirangathu Thevathaigal was one I cherished always. You can feel the pain of nostalgia when you are on the last line of each short story.
Yeah - I loved Srirangathu Devathaigal - the innocence of childhood was so evident in that and he had a great writing style. I have read many of his columns in AV and also his short stories, novels - love his style of writing. One of the best contemporary writers in Tamil. He can be singly credited with taking science to the nooks and corners of TN in simple tamil, that layman could understand. Got to know through Laksh that he is no more and it is indeed very sad.

I never knew who was Sujatha. One of my Tamil friend in HYD told me this name couple of yrs ago. Sad to know he passed away. I always thought it is a she.

that he created a new raga in collaboration with the veteran classical exponent T N Seshagopalan & named it after his wife Sujatha ?
that he was an ardent cricket fan & had played the game when young ?
that he had done 'modern art' painting ?
that he used to play the keyboard ?
that he knows to fly a plane ?
that he has written a book on brain & its functions called 'thalamai seyalakam' ?
that he has written about the meeting of Physics with our Upanishads in 'Oru vigyanapaarvayil' ?
that he has interviewed many candidates in 'Bharath Electronics' & written about his experiences on a 'how to' list on the dos & don'ts of interviews ?

and last but not least, though he penned his script & dialogues for K Balachander (Ninaithale inikkum), Kamal Hasan (Vikram), Rajnikant (priya), Mani Rathnam (Anjali, Aaytha ezhuthu (Yuva), Kannathil muththamittaal, Uyire (Dil se), Guru; Rajiv Menon's Kandukondein kandukondein; Shankar's Jeans, Indian (Hindustani), Mudalvan (Nayak),Anniyan (Aparichit)& now has finished the scripts of Shanker's 'Robot' which will be made in all languages, An Aish - Abhishek starrer multilingual of Mani Rathnam & Kamal Hassan's Dasavatharam etc etc etc, he has not been given a single 'filmfare' or any other award for script writing. He was never even acknowledged in the titles of some films. I dare say without him movies will never be the same again. Who can ever forget the delicious Tirunelveli tamizh that he had used in Adiyaman's 'Dum dum dum' ? North Indians don't even know he existed.
Some jealous persons kept on tarnishing his name acting as self appointed moral police & a drama was created & enacted to insult him. He kept mum for everything. Not only that, he maintained friendly relations with the very same people 'cause he needed 'friends'. A critic invited him on Sun TV along with Shankar for talking about 'Boys' (which was a bigger hit in Telugu), totally ignored him to speak only to Shanker & later on attended his 'irangal koottam'.
That much for the 'malice' of our society & magnanimity of the person !
